Master of Science in Physics - Specialization in *Electronics *Material Science

Intake: 50

  • Program CodeMSC-002
  • Duration 2 Years
  • Level Post Graduate Programme
  • Department Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
The field of Physics is multifarious and applies to the solution of numerous real-life human requirements. As a natural science, it looks at the composition of materials, their properties, the way sound waves, electronic waves and material particles function and how properties of matter can be harnessed in various industries.

It also works in areas of infrastructure, aerospace, and equipment design. The Electronics specialization within Physics looks at the growth and preparation of new materials, their processing, fabrication, bonding and encapsulation. It also makes inquiry into the reliability, failure analysis, quality assurance and characterisation related to a wide range of applications in electronics. The study of Material Science includes crystalline semiconductors, metalized film conductors, dielectric films, solders, ceramics and polymers.

The two-year Master of Science in Physics programme offered by the Department of Applied Science & Humanities has a rich curriculum that includes Classical Mechanics, Mathematical Physics, Electromagnetic Theory, Condensed Matter Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics, Structure of Materials, Laser and Computational Physics, and Nano Materials. The students are given additional knowledge in Solid State Physics, Electronics and Quantum Mechanics, Biophysics at Cellular Level, current research areas of Material Science, and Physics applications in climate and environmental areas. In the second year, the students can either undertake the specialist track of Electronics or Material Science. Those taking Electronics study additional subjects such as Laser Physics, Electronics Devices, and Computational Physics, while those opting for Material Science study Structure of Materials, and Nano-materials.

The programme includes lab work based on semiconductor analysis, pure physics lab experimentation, research in nano-materials, and electronics materials and their use in industrial procedures. It also includes projects, dissertation, industrial visits, subject expert talks, workshops and seminars.
